HOW TO TOGGLE SITEMAP AND/OR DISABLE INDEXING OF YOUR PAGES?

5 - minute read

Before digging deeper into setting this up in your Convertri pages and funnels, let us briefly explore what it is and what it does.

WHAT IS A SITEMAP?

Since most of you are going to use this capability for your SEO efforts with Google and Bing, so let me explain this in language of Google.

A sitemap is a file where you provide information about the pages, videos, and other files on your site, and the relationships between them. Search engines like Google read this file to crawl your site more efficiently. A sitemap tells Google which pages and files you think are important (priority) in your site, and also provides valuable information about these files. For example, when the page was last updated and any alternate language versions of the page.

See below image for tricks.convertri.com/sitemap.xml and it should give you a fairly good idea! :)

Hopefully now you know that you can find your sitemap at subdomain.convertri.com/sitemap.xml

DOES YOUR WEBSITE REQUIRE A SITEMAP?

You may be curious to know if you really need a sitemap or can skip it? Short answer is, if you have a simple funnel with 2/3 pages which you do not update regularly, then you DO NOT need to modify sitemap. Just visit your Webmaster console and directly add your pages.

Also, if all your pages are properly hyperlinked then google bot can crawl around all your pages, without working on a sitemap!

On the other hand if you have a big website with many pages and sub-pages and/or you regularly update your pages, then it is advisable to invest time on sitemap.

In a normal website you would add an entry to your robots.txt file to point towards your sitemap.xml however in Convertri you do not have to do this! It is already thought for and enabled in the backend and your sitemap is always visible at a standard path  which is yoursubdomain.convertri.com/sitemap.xml or if you have connected your domain, then check eg. www.majorbonus.com/sitemap.xml

HOW TO REMOVE A PAGE FROM SITEMAP?

If you have a Thank You page which you do not want crawlers and googlebot or bingbot to index and show in search results then you need to remove the page from your sitemap by following below shown steps.

Similarly if you wish to unhide or add a page again to sitemap, then simply follow these same steps again and select "Add to Sitemap", as shown below:

HOW TO ADD ROBOTS META TAGS NOINDEX AND NOFOLLOW?

Robots meta tag helps you implement a page-specific approach to control how an individual page should be indexed and served to users in Google Search results.

To ease your understanding this is definition of both the options:

noindex: Tells googlebot or bingbot to not show this page in search results. If you don't select this option in your page, then your page may be indexed and shown in search results.

nofollow: Tells googlebot or bingbot to not follow the links on this page. If you don't select this option in your page,  then Googlebot / Bingbot may use links in the page to discover other linked pages.

NOTE: Both these options are enabled by default

To disable these options, go to "Page Settings" >> "Meta Info" >> "Robots" section as shown in below video and click the toggle.

To enable again, follow same steps as above, and enable the options.
